The Central Auditorium Learning Commons (Central Auditorium LC), a common learning space on Nishinomiya Uegahara campus opened on November 25 and its opening ceremony was held at the Central Auditorium LC, located in the basement of the Central Auditorium (125th Anniversary Commemorative Auditorium) on Nishinomiya Uegahara campus.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Professor Masanobu Kosuga, vice president and director of the Division of Academic Affairs said, “I’m glad that we were able to open the Central Auditorium LC after having opened the Academic Commons at Kobe-Sanda campus last year and the Building H Learning Commons (Building H LC) at Nishinomiya Uegahara Campus in spring this year. I hope that this LC will be used by many students for extra-curricular learning activities in the first place and that then, it will be also used for formal classes.”

Professor Takahiro Hirabayashi, director of the Center for Research into and Promotion of Higher Education

Then, Professor Takahiro Hirabayashi, director of the Center for Research into and Promotion of Higher Education gave a speech titled “On the Occasion of Opening of the Central Auditorium Learning Commons.” In his speech he referred to various issues that have arisen from the use of the Building H LC and explained the roles expected of the Central Auditorium LC.

Professor Hirabayashi said, “Seven group study rooms in the Building H LC are nearly fully occupied throughout the day. Looking at occupancy rates by month for timeslots during the first period when occupancy rates are relatively low, the rate was 31 percent last June, but it doubled to 63 percent last October. The average occupancy rate during the time from the second period to 23:00 is more than 80 percent and for some timeslots, occupancy rates are as high as 97 percent. The Central Auditorium LC is expected to complement the Building H LC.”

He also stated that from the perspective of assurance of learning, students need to study 8–10 hours a day during each semester. Hoping that students would make full use of the new LC, he said, “Active learning, which promotes students’ active and voluntary learning, is expected to play a greater role in education. If an active learning approach works effectively with course syllabuses and learning portfolios, we will be able to witness a new paradigm of youth-centered learning in the 21st century.”
