At the ceremonies, President Osamu Murata pointed out that the world was undergoing massive upheaval. In particular, he noted the possibility that human workers would be supplanted by artificial intelligence and robots, as technology continues to improve. “It is precisely because we live in this sort of age that while naturally, you should acquire knowledge and skills at university, you must also develop the creativity to invent new things and the fortitude to take on new challenges, to tackle the “unsolvable problems,” President Murata said. “To do so, find something during your university days to totally devote yourself to. Moreover, try to realize your big dreams and aspirations, or implement the plans you have. You may want to give up, and you may experience failure. However, I hope that you will pursue those dreams and plans, and not get discouraged. That in itself will give you all great strength.”

In addition, President Murata cited taking on multiple challenges as something that he wanted students to strive for. “Seeking knowledge and club activities at the same time, doing specialized studies while also studying abroad or taking extracurricular activities, or doing your course of study at multiple departments; challenge yourself to take on two pursuits simultaneously. Innovation and creativity are only born when combining knowledge and wisdom from separate fields,” he emphasized. President Murata encouraged the new students, saying “While you’re enrolled in university, challenge yourself and make yourself stronger. From the bottom of my heart, I hope that you will grow up to become World Citizens who embody the spirit of Mastery for Service, with high aspirations to spread your wings to the world and contribute to the happiness of humanity.”

In his following congratulatory address, Kwansei Gakuin Chancellor Musubi Tabuchi welcomed the students. “Everyone has joined various departments and courses of study, but at the same time, you have all become a part of Kwansei Gakuin. Everyone who gathers at the kindergarten, up to everyone attending the graduate school, is part of the same Kwansei Gakuin fellowship. I hope that as one of those members, you will understand what Kwansei Gakuin is about, and experience for yourself how all of Kwansei Gakuin functions by holding the same foundational principles and mission, as it values the independence and individuality of each school. Regardless of someone’s school, department or campus, I want you to feel that you are in the same fellowship at Kwansei Gakuin. I hope that you will all lead fulfilling student lives as members of the university, and I look forward to being able to walk together with you all, together at Kwansei Gakuin.”
