Kumamon, the mascot who serves in a dual role as the chief of both Kumamoto Prefecture’s sales department and its happiness department, made a surprise appearance during a class at the School of Sociology. His visit was concurrent with a class lecture about the brand strategies of Kumamon and Kumamoto Prefecture. Kumamon also had a meeting with the Kwansei Gakuin students who have been volunteering on-site in quake-stricken areas of Kumamoto, through the Human Services Support Office.

The class which Kumamon visited was the “Cultural Effects of Advertising” lecture at the School of Sociology. After various examples of advertising communication successes were introduced to the class, such as the brand strategy of Kumamoto Prefecture and the effects of using Kumamon in commercials, Kumamon made his appearance. The roughly 500 students in attendance, having no prior knowledge of the visit, were quite surprised. The students did calisthenics along with Kumamon and took group photos, and the lecture hall was filled wall-to-wall with their smiles.

Kumamon’s meeting with the volunteers took place before class. The ten students gave reports about how the necessary kinds of support have changed now that some time has passed since the earthquake, and the importance of providing aid after the dismantling of temporary housing. They also spoke about how it was a must to continue thinking of mechanisms to connect people from Kumamoto with their fellow residents, and to keep on letting many people know what they had seen with their own eyes, while Kumamon listened to their words with great interest.
