Assistant Professor Kyoko Takeuchi Presents at the 2nd International Trans Studies Conference

The 2nd International Trans Studies Conference

Kyoko Takeuchi, Assistant Professor, School of Sociology, presented their research at The 2nd International Trans Studies Conference held in Illinois, USA, from 4 September 2024 to 7 September 2024. They presented on the personal histories of how X-jendā people in Japan have lived through diverse category transitions and category non-fitting. Also, they served as session chairs in a session on identity formation. The 2nd International Trans Studies Conference is an international conference that aims to bring together researchers in the field of transgender studies, which is often marginalised, from around the world to engage in cross-disciplinary discussions, covering topics as diverse as identity formation, policy, literature, health, social welfare, body, and arts. In the research presentations, they were able to exchange views with presenters from the US and Canada and discuss not only X-jendā identities but also activities around institutionalised third genders such as the X in the passport and its relevance to the X-jendā movement in Japan, leading them to rethink their research from perspectives not available at the conference in Japan.
