KGU Members Fill the Lambuth Chapel for a Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Victim Memorial Service
2019.01.12
On January 9th (Wednesday), a service was held at the Lambuth Memorial Chapel on the Nishinomiya Uegahara Campus to honor the memory of those who died in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
Approximately 160 students, faculty and staff members, and local area residents came together to pay their respects. 15 students and eight faculty and staff members from Kwansei Gakuin University perished in the earthquake. This memorial service has been held every year since 1996, so that people will not forget the disaster and the lessons learned from it. Professor Tomohiro Omiya, who officiated the service, spoke about his own experiences as a survivor of the earthquake. “While the city has been rebuilt, there are some people, who take more time than others, who still haven’t gotten over the earthquake yet. I feel that in the course of reconstruction after a disaster, weak people are discarded. During these 23 years, has Kwansei Gakuin been able to walk alongside people in weak positions? We must re-examine ourselves once more,” he said. After the address, the handbell choir gave a 15-handbell salute in remembrance of those who were lost, and there was a moment of silence by all in attendance.
